4TH FEDERATED MISSION NETWORKING SEMINAR

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – Major General Frank Schlösser, Commander of NATO CIS Group (NCISG) chaired the Federated Mission Networking (FMN) Seminar from 16 – 18 May 2022.

The NATO Military Committee is the Governance Authority of FMN. Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of the Military Committee, welcomed all participants to the FMN Seminar via a video speech, emphasising the importance of FMN bringing interoperability to Alliance activities.

The FMN Seminar was a great success with many prominent keynotes speeches and discussions in the four Breakout Sessions.    The 4th FMN Seminar was well attended, and included 35 flag officers from 34 FMN Affiliates. The Seminar's theme was "Effective Multinational Command and Control and Multi-Domain Operations Turning Concept into Reality". It was clear that there is a strong need for a Day-Zero Interoperable capability, to which Federated Mission Networking is the answer.

The FMN Seminar 2022 was co-hosted by Germany and the United States of America and they were represented by Mr Stuart A. Whitehead, Deputy Director Cyber and C4 Integration Joint Staff J6 (Seminar Co-Host USA) and Vice Admiral Dr. Thomas Daum, Chief of the Cyber and Information Domain Service (Seminar Co-Host Germany).

Some of the conclusions of the FMN Seminar 2022 included the need for resourcing FMN in both NATO and Nations – both financially and increased Subject Matter Expert support. Furthermore, the participants concluded that the use of FMN principles in daily operations is paramount to the continued forward movement towards Day-Zero Interoperability.
